In light of recent disease outbreaks, including the most severe flu season in 15 years and a measles resurgence in Texas, concerns about America’s public health infrastructure are intensifying. The Trump administration’s initiative to reduce the federal workforce, led by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has resulted in significant job cuts at major public health agencies such as the CDC, NIH, and FDA. While the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) has been spared for now due to public backlash, the program’s future remains uncertain, especially under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has downplayed infectious disease threats. Experts warn that additional layoffs and funding cuts could severely impair America’s ability to manage future public health crises.

The unions seek an injunction to halt further firings and to reinstate those already affected. Despite a federal judge’s refusal to temporarily block the layoffs, stating that claims must be pursued under federal employment law, the lawsuit argues that OPM’s actions violate the Administrative Procedure Act.
