STEADY: The 90-Second Breathing Practice for Opening Your Inbox

Federal employees are carrying a heavier emotional load this year, and Southworth PC is launching STEADY, a new weekly mindfulness practice built for exactly that.

A New Monday Series for a Hard Year

Every Monday, STEADY will offer one short, practical practice for the week federal service is actually giving people right now — no incense, no jargon, and no pitch. The goal is simple: better information for a nervous system that is already doing its job in a hard year.

The Inbox Breath: A 90-Second Practice

This week's practice takes about ninety seconds, before you open your inbox.

  • Place a hand on the desk and actually feel the surface.
  • Take one slow breath in through the nose, and let the exhale run longer than the inhale.
  • Repeat, breathing a little slower each time.
  • On the final exhale, drop your shoulders on purpose.
  • Open the inbox on your own exhale — not on the inbox's terms.

The emails are the same either way. The difference is whether you arrive at them as the person breathing, or the person already braced.

Why This Small Practice Matters

If your mind wandered while reading the steps above, that is completely normal. Noticing the wandering is the actual skill, not a failure to concentrate. Save this practice for tomorrow morning — it works on any morning you remember it exists.
