Ninety Seconds Before Your First Meeting: A Monday Reset for Federal Employees
Federal employees are heading into another Monday where the news found them before they were fully awake. This is a 90-second reset you can do at your desk, in your car, or in the parking lot before your first meeting. No app. Nothing to buy.
Ninety Seconds, Three Steps
1. Put Both Feet on the Floor
Flat, both of them. Push down a little and feel the floor push back. That contact is real and it is happening right now — which is more than can be said for most of what is competing for your attention this morning.
2. Take Three Slow Breaths
In through your nose. Out slowly, like you are fogging a window. Do it three times, and do not rush the exhale. The long out-breath is the part that does the work.
3. Name One Thing You Control Today
Look at your calendar and pick one item that is actually yours — a document you will finish, a call you will return, a conversation you will have. Just one. Start there.
Your Mind Will Wander, and That Is Not Failing
Somewhere in the second breath you will be back on the contract news, or the appeals news, or the email you have not answered. That is not doing it wrong. Noticing that you drifted and coming back to your feet is the entire exercise — the drift is what gives you something to come back from.
Why This Matters for Federal Employees Right Now
The rules governing federal employment have been changing faster than anyone can reasonably track, and living inside that uncertainty is tiring in a way that is easy to underestimate. Ninety seconds will not resolve a RIF notice or a proposed removal. What it can do is keep you from walking into your 9:00 meeting already depleted — and the clearer decisions tend to get made by people who are not running on empty.
None of this is a substitute for real support. If the stress is affecting your sleep, your health, or your ability to do your job, that is worth raising with your doctor or with your agency’s Employee Assistance Program.
The Practical Takeaway
The news will still be there at lunch. It does not need you at 8:59. Save this one for the next hard Monday, and give yourself the ninety seconds.
