Feed the DMV: Let's Show Up for Our Community

Federal employees are no strangers to uncertainty. Shutdown threats, benefit cuts, inflation, and recent federal job losses have pushed many households across the DMV to the edge. Against that backdrop, moments of concrete, community-level support matter more than ever. On December 20, Southworth PC is proud to partner with Radio One Washington, DC for Feed the DMV, a food drive benefiting the Capital Area Food Bank.

This is not abstract charity. It is immediate, practical assistance for families navigating a heavier-than-usual year.

Why This Food Drive Matters Right Now

Across the region, households are absorbing the cumulative impact of lost SNAP benefits, rising grocery prices, and economic instability tied to federal workforce changes. Even for GS-level employees who remain employed, financial margins have narrowed. For contractors, probationary employees, and families affected by job cuts, the strain is even more acute.

Food insecurity does not always look dramatic from the outside. Often, it shows up as quiet tradeoffs—skipping protein, stretching meals, or worrying about whether the pantry will last until the next paycheck. Community-based food drives help stabilize families in precisely these moments. A few donated items can translate into real relief.

Where to Participate on December 20

Southworth PC and Radio One will be visiting three Giant Food locations throughout the day, collecting shelf-stable donations that will stay right here in the DMV community:

  • Hyattsville Giant
    3521 East West Highway
    9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

  • Largo Giant
    10480 Campus Way South
    10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

  • Bowie Giant
    810 Fairmont Drive
    12:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Donations can be dropped off at any of these locations during the listed times.

What to Bring

The most helpful items are everyday staples that families can use immediately. These include canned goods, boxed pasta, rice, shelf-stable snacks for kids, baby supplies, and bottled water. If it can sit on a shelf and feed a household, it will help.

No single donation is too small. Collective effort is what turns a simple grocery bag into meaningful community support.

A Mindful Way to Give Back

For federal employees carrying stress about workplace changes or the broader state of public service, acts like this serve another purpose. They reconnect people to agency—reminding them that even when large systems feel unpredictable, small, intentional actions still matter. Supporting neighbors is a grounded, values-aligned way to respond to uncertainty without becoming overwhelmed by it.

Those who want to stay informed about federal workplace changes, employee rights, and practical guidance can find deeper resources through Southworth PC’s newsletter and Power Hub, where ongoing updates are shared thoughtfully and accessibly.

December 20 is an opportunity to show up for the community, support local families, and make the season a little less heavy for someone else.
