How to Protect Yourself in a Federal RIF

federal employment mindful federal employee reduction in force sf 50 guide veterans preference Feb 25, 2025

If you're a federal employee concerned about a Reduction in Force (RIF), preparation is key. The first step? Check your most recent SF 50—this document plays a significant role in determining your retention standing.

Here’s what you need to look at:

  • Tenure Group (Block 24):

    • Tenure 1: Highest retention standing (career employees).
    • Tenure 2: Career-conditional, which may put you at higher risk.
    • Tenure 3: Temporary or term appointments—most vulnerable.
  • Veteran’s Preference (Block 26):

    • Subgroup AD: Highest priority (30%+ service-connected disability).
    • Subgroup A: Preference-eligible veterans.
    • Subgroup B: Everyone else.
    • If you qualify for veteran’s preference, ensure Block 23 states “6.”
  • Service Computation Date (SCD) (Block 31):

    • If you’ve had breaks in service, prior military time, or credited non-federal experience, your RIF SCD may be different than the one on your SF 50.
    • If you receive a RIF notice, immediately verify your official RIF SCD with HR. Errors could impact your job retention.

Why Acting Now is Crucial

Each agency sets its own competitive areas and levels during a RIF, meaning job security can vary widely. Understanding your SF 50 today gives you an early advantage—waiting until a RIF notice arrives could be too late to correct critical errors.
