Don’t Depend on the Algorithm for Critical Federal Employment News

Yesterday, a federal judge issued one of the most important rulings of the year for civil servants: OPM’s mass probationary firings were unlawful. On Instagram and YouTube, the news spread fast—tens of thousands of federal employees saw it. But on TikTok, the same post was buried: under 1,000 views, far below normal reach.

That should concern every federal employee. If you rely only on TikTok’s algorithm to surface updates, you risk missing the very rulings that protect your job, your rights, and your career.

Why This Update Mattered

The court ruled that OPM had no authority to order mass probationary terminations. Agencies, not OPM, must make individualized decisions, and blanket “performance-based” labels without review were unlawful. While the ruling did not reinstate the thousands who lost their jobs, it required agencies to issue letters clarifying that those separations were not performance-related.

For affected employees, that correction can safeguard professional reputation and future applications. But only those who heard about the ruling will know how to use it.

The Problem With Algorithm-Filtered News

TikTok and other platforms prioritize engagement, not accuracy or importance. A lighthearted clip can go viral, while urgent legal news may vanish into obscurity. That dynamic puts federal employees at real risk—because awareness of these rulings is often the first step toward protecting your rights.

Imagine missing the chance to file an appeal, request reconsideration, or correct your employment record simply because an algorithm decided you wouldn’t see the update.

Building a Direct Line to Trusted Information

The lesson here is simple: don’t let algorithms control what you know about your own career. Seek out direct, reliable sources. For example, I maintain a free daily newsletter at fedlegalhelp.com/newsletter, where these updates arrive in your inbox without social media filtering them out.

A Mindful Approach to Information Overload

It’s natural to feel anxious when platforms control what you see. Mindfulness offers a steadier perspective: notice the frustration, but don’t let it consume you. By creating your own reliable channels of information, you reduce uncertainty and reclaim control.

Your federal career deserves more than the whims of an algorithm. Stay informed, stay steady, and remember—you are more than your GS level or your follower count.
