The Real Cost of Mass Federal Layoffs

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recently criticized the DOGE initiative’s approach under Elon Musk: focusing on firing people instead of fixing inefficiencies. The promise was massive savings—up to $2 trillion annually. The reality? A fraction of that, maybe $200 billion, and at a steep cost to federal agencies and the public they serve.

For federal employees, the lesson is clear: cutting headcount without thoughtful analysis does not solve systemic problems. It simply leaves fewer people to do the same critical work.

How Service to the Public Suffers

The public often hears about “government waste,” but rarely sees the human impact of abrupt cuts. The truth is sobering:

  • IRS: Fewer staff led to refund delays and phones going unanswered.

  • VA: Vacancies stalled disability claims and slowed access to medical appointments.

  • DHS: Fewer analysts created backlogs in investigations and security vetting.

  • Social Security & State Department: Processing times for benefits and passports stretched longer than ever.

These aren’t abstract inconveniences—they are the lifelines of millions of Americans. When headcount drops too quickly, service quality inevitably declines.

Waste vs. Workforce: The Right Question

Lutnick’s point is worth pausing on. Cutting “waste, fraud, and abuse” requires careful study. Each agency has inefficiencies—outdated procurement processes, duplicative reporting requirements, misaligned IT systems—that eat up resources. But identifying and fixing those inefficiencies is a different project than simply cutting jobs.

As a federal employee, you know where the inefficiencies are. You also know where reductions have already pushed workloads to the breaking point. That perspective matters—because reform that ignores frontline experience will always miss the mark.

Staying Grounded in Uncertain Times

If you’re feeling the weight of these changes, you’re not alone. A mindful perspective can help: remember that you are not defined by the latest policy swing. Your skills, dedication, and professionalism endure even when leadership gets it “backward.” Taking time to notice what is within your control—documenting your work, clarifying priorities, and maintaining balance—protects both your well-being and your long-term career.
