The Banner vs. Reality: Workers First or Workers Forgotten?

When a towering banner with the words “AMERICAN WORKERS FIRST” was draped across the Department of Labor, the image was meant to project strength and reassurance. But for federal employees—and millions of private sector workers—the reality has been quite the opposite. Policies enacted in 2025 have steadily chipped away at workplace protections, enforcement capacity, and the stability of civil service itself.

Shrinking Enforcement for Private Sector Workers

The Department of Labor has reduced enforcement of wage and safety laws, meaning fewer investigations into wage theft or hazardous conditions. A proposed 35% budget cut would slash inspectors and oversight even further. At the same time, decades-old equal opportunity requirements for federal contractors were rolled back, weakening safeguards against discrimination in some of the country’s largest workplaces. Add in Project 2025 initiatives to curb union power, limit overtime pay, and weaken safety rules, and it becomes clear that “Workers First” is more slogan than substance.

Federal Employees Under Siege

Inside government, the picture is equally stark. A revived version of Schedule F has reclassified tens of thousands of civil service positions, making it easier to dismiss career employees at will. Massive layoffs—10,000 at HHS alone—have followed, with the Supreme Court opening the door to as many as 200,000 cuts across agencies.

Equally troubling is the Deferred Resignation Program (DRP). Under this initiative, agencies pressured employees into signing agreements to leave their jobs months in advance. More than 150,000 workers signed on, many describing the process as coercive and traumatizing. Ironically, agencies like the IRS now struggle to rehire staff after cutting too deeply to function.

A Mindful Approach in a Chaotic System

If you are a federal employee caught in this storm, the banner outside the Department of Labor is less important than the paper trail inside your desk. Save your performance reviews, notices, and separation documents. If pressured into signing a DRP or faced with sudden reclassification, remember that you still have rights—appeals to the MSPB, EEO claims, and union representation remain avenues of protection.

Mindfulness can also play a role here: while you cannot control the banners or the policies, you can take deliberate steps to steady yourself. Slow down, breathe, and act with clarity. A well-kept record and a measured response often carry more weight than panic or despair.

The Real “Workers First”

True workers-first policy is not about optics; it is about ensuring safe workplaces, fair pay, and stability in public service. For federal employees facing today’s uncertainties, the most powerful response is awareness, documentation, and informed action.
